As a fine artist, the human figure has always been one of my main interests, especially faces. Diverse, coloured and unique, they offer an infinite palette of emotions and expressions.
Aware of the technique, my drawing skills are the basis of each painting; they ‘hold’ the composition by making shapes fit together in space. Without the drawing no painting is possible.
For some time now I have had the feeling of having lost interest in human representation. Animal painting has become my main interest. It appears to me like a ‘ray of light’ in this dark world.
Animals, like art, are part of my childhood. They are my passions. I love them and I try my best to respect and support them. Their well-being, their protection and conservation is a concern to me. And what’s better than a painting to pay tribute to them, to immortalise and idealise them, and to give them back a place in this world dominated by human beings.
Painting animals is a kind of moral commitment, a catharsis as well as a challenge. It is a journey starting with an idea turned into a drawing, then completed with paint. The accuracy of details and the addition of textures bring realism to each animal (but not hyperrealism).
Through the act of painting I feel a kind of connection with animals. They are technically more interesting to paint than human figures, more diverse in terms of textures (hair, feathers, scales), patterns and colours.
My animals have an inner force, they are imposing, sometimes rebels, sometimes pensive or fragile… The lack of a realistic background is intentional and non-narrative. The animal imposes himself on the onlookers.
Each animal is painted on an Art Deco background (a style and period I love), whose golden patterns give rhythm to the picture. The animal is glorified.
Beyond the portraiture, and the work on patterns, is a wish to raise awarness on the beauty and fragility of each species.
Through the years my style has evolved but my intentions remain the same: depicting an expression, a gaze, a life!
